Last year over a quarter of all children aged between 4 and 11 in Hampshire took part in the Summer Reading Challenge. This year we want you to help us to break that record by signing up at any of Hampshire’s Libraries.
A fun and rewarding way to keep up their reading during the long holiday, this year there is a chance for them to take part in an official attempt to set a new Guinness World Record!
The Challenge for them is to read or listen to six library books between 11 July and 13 September. As they progress through the challenge they can earn stickers, a Record Breakers Certificate and even a medal if they complete the Challenge.
This year the Reading Agency has joined forces with Guinness World Records to set a new record for the number of children signed up to the Reading Challenge. Children who register at one of 15 Hampshire libraries on the very first day, Saturday 11 July 2015, can make their pledge and take part in the world record bid.
Councillor Andrew Gibson, Hampshire County Council’s Executive member for Culture, Recreation and Countryside, said: “The Summer Reading Challenge makes reading fun as there are things to collect along the way. It is open to all children aged 4-11 and all participants will also get a Wacky and Weird World Record Breakers poster and special stickers.
“All our schools support the scheme. Children’s reading ability can dip over the summer and research by the Reading Agency has found that those who take part in the Summer Reading Challenge maintain, and even improve, their reading level over this period.”
