Preparations are well underway for the immensely popular Christmas Lights Switch On event in Andover High Street on Friday, 21 November. The Breeze will compere the evening and there is a packed programme of local performers giving their time and talent for free to support this sparkling event.
This year the loss of Andover Town Council as one of the key sponsors of the Switch On festivities has led to Test Valley Borough Council having to look at new ways to bridge the funding gap to ensure that the biggest show in the Andover calendar goes on. The Council has approached local businesses, and many have come to the rescue in return for their name in lights on the big screen.
Leader of the Borough Council, Councillor Ian Carr, said: “The Borough Council funds the switch on event as part of its commitment to encouraging Andover High Street to function as a vibrant and bustling space. Alongside the popular Sunday markets and other seasonal events, we wanted to make sure that the show goes on and the lead up to Christmas goes with a bang!
“I would like to thank all the local businesses who have so kindly added their support to this event, strengthening the local spirit that is so evident across the town.” The local businesses who have generously signed up to support this major event include:
- Martin & Co
- Star & Garter
- Weyhill Fair Public House
- The Lights
- Valley Leisure
- Andover & Villages
Basepoint Andover has signed up to be the main stage sponsor.
As a result, this year’s event is set to be bigger and better than ever with lots of festive music on stage and a roller skating Christmas Tree and Reindeer mingling with the crowds.
There will be fairground rides in the High Street and a selection of scrumptious hot food from local providers, including Mexican, Hog Roast and Bengal Street Food.
The event will culminate with the switching on of the Town Council’s Christmas Lights at 7.30pm, and a fabulous firework display provided by the Chantry Centre.
During the day the main stage will be set up, and from 10am – 2pm there will be craft and food stalls to the side of the Guildhall.
