Road Improvement Disruptions for A303 – A34 – M3 – M27 – WC 20th August 2018

The following summary of planned new and ongoing road improvements over the coming week is correct as of Friday 17 August but could be subject to change due to weather conditions or unforeseen circumstances. All our improvement work is carried out with the aim of causing as little disruption as possible.

M3 junction 14 Eastleigh, Hampshire: bridge maintenance

Work to ensure road user safety by maintaining the bridge which carries the M3 over the link to the M27 westbound finishes this week. The link from the M3 southbound to the M27 westbound will be closed overnight, between 9pm and 6am, until Thursday 23 August. A clearly signed diversion will be in place via M27 junction 5.

In addition, the southbound entry slip road at junction 13 will be closed during the same period. A clearly signed diversion will be in place via Chilworth Roundabout, Bassett Green Road and Stoneham Way to access the M27 and M3 at junction 5.

M4 junction 8/9 to 10 Littlefield Green, Berkshire: bridge maintenance

Work to ensure road safety by maintaining the bridge that carries the B3024 over the M4 continues this week. Two-way temporary traffic lights will be in place over the bridge until Friday 21 September. In addition the B3024 over the bridge will be fully closed overnight, between 9pm and 5am) during the same period (Monday to Friday only).

During the closures a clearly signed diversion will be in place via Waltham St Lawrence, Twyford, Shurlock Row, Warfield, Hawthorn Hill and Touchen-End. This route has been approved by the local authority for its suitability for most types of vehicles, however it is unsuitable for vehicles higher than 3.5 metres.

M4 junction 13 Chieveley, West Berkshire: road markings

Work to improve journeys by renewing the road markings at junction 13 takes place this week. Lane closures will be in place on the M4 east and westbound carriageways overnight, between 9pm and 6am, from Monday 20 August for 5 nights.

In addition, the westbound exit and entry slip roads will be closed overnight, between 9pm and 6am, on Thursday 23 August. Clearly signed diversions will be in place via the adjacent junctions.

M27 junctions 3 to 4 Southampton, Hampshire: bridge reconstruction

Work to maintain journeys and ensure road user safety by replacing the Romsey Road bridge near junction 3 continues this week. A 50mph speed restriction is in place on the M27 east and westbound carriageways beneath the bridge until summer 2019. In addition, lane closures are in place on both carriageways overnight, between 9pm and 6am, until Thursday 23 August.

A3 Guildford, Surrey: resurfacing

Works to improve journeys by resurfacing a section of the A3 northbound carriageway near the A31 Hogs Back starts this week. The A3 northbound carriageway will be closed from Compton to the Stoke Interchange overnight, between 9pm and 6am, from Monday 20 August for 6 nights (Monday to Friday only).

A clearly signed diversion will be in place from Compton via the B3000 Puttenham Heath Road, the Hogs Back, A31 Farnham Road, A3100 London Road and the A25.

A3(M) Bedhampton, Hampshire: resurfacing

Work to improve journeys by resurfacing a section of the A3(M) southbound carriageway near Bedhampton continues this week. The A3(M) southbound carriageway will be fully closed from junction 5 to the A27 westbound overnight, between 9pm and 6am, until Monday 3 September (Monday to Friday only). A clearly signed diversion will be in place from junction 5 down onto the A27 eastbound carriageway, exiting at the A3023 Langstone junction, loop around the roundabout and join the A27 westbound carriageway.

A31 Stoney Cross to Picket Post, Hampshire: drainage

Work to ensure road user safety by maintaining the drainage system along the A31 takes place this week. A lane closure will be in place on the A31 east and westbound carriageways overnight, between 9pm and 6am, from Monday 20 August for 5 nights.

A34 Newbury, West Berkshire: resurfacing

Work to improve journeys by resurfacing the A34 continues week. The A34 southbound carriageway will be closed from Chieveley to the A4 Speen junction overnight, between 9pm and 6am, on Monday 20 August. In addition, the A34 northbound carriageway will be closed from the A4 Speen junction to Chieveley overnight, between 9pm and 6am, on Tuesday 21 August.

Two clearly signed diversions will be in place:

Non-motorway vehicles: from Newbury, north on the B4009 towards Hermitage, north-west along Priors Court Road towards Chieveley, then either left at Graces Lane for the service area/hotels and M4, or continue through Chieveley/Beedon for the A34 northbound

Motorway permitted vehicles: from Newbury, travel west along the A4 towards Hungerford, turn right onto the A338 towards Wantage, joining the M4 at junction 14

A34 Abingdon, Oxfordshire: safety barrier

Work to ensure road user safety by replacing sections of safety barrier along the A34 near Abingdon starts this week. 24 hour narrow lane running and a 50mph speed restriction will be in place on the A34 northbound carriageway from Wednesday 22 August until Friday 7 September.

In addition, the A34 northbound carriageway will be closed from the A415 Marcham Interchange to the A423 Hinksey Hill Interchange overnight, between 9pm and 6am, for the same duration (Monday to Friday only). A clearly signed diversion will be in place via the A415 Marcham Road, Colwell Drive, Copenhagen Drive, Dunmore Road, Oxford Road and Hinksey Hill.

A303 Norton, Hampshire: barrier replacement

Work to carry out essential safety barrier maintenance finishes this week. The A303 eastbound will be closed from the A34 (Bullington Cross) to the Overton/Micheldever junction overnight, between 9pm and 6am, until Tuesday 21 August. A clearly signed diversion will be in place via the A34 towards Winchester, then north on the A33.

Safety at roadworks

Highways England is working with the industry and road users to reduce the risks of working on the roads. For the safety of road workers and all road users, when you are approaching roadworks:

Keep within the speed limit – it is there for your safety.

Get into the correct lane in good time – don’t keep switching.

Concentrate on the road ahead, not the roadworks.

Be alert for works’ traffic leaving or entering roadworks.

Keep a safe distance – there could be queues in front.

Observe all signs – they are there to help you.

And be alert for road workers, the roads are their workplace.
