Mothercare Latest Victim of High Street Downturn

Mothercare in Basingstoke

Although Andover has not had a Mothercare in some time, the Basingstoke store will be a loss to local parents if the administrators cannot save the ailing business.

Over 2500 employees in the Uk may face redundancy if administrators are unable to source a buyer for the popular children’s store.

A spokesperson from Mothercare said, “Mothercare UK is not capable of returning to a level of structural profitability and returns that are sustainable for the group.

“Furthermore, the company is unable to continue to satisfy the ongoing cash needs of Mothercare UK.”

Mothercare UK is being criticised heavily today by retail analyst, Steve Dresser for not adapting to online shopping, comparing it to the recent collapse of Thomas Cook.

Mothercare stores also host sections from Early Learning Centre and Clarks Shoes.

Mothercare stores across the UK will continue to trade normally for the time being.

What are the Different Types of Refrigerators?

Types of Refrigerators

To understand what kinds of refrigerators there are, pay attention to the following parameters:

Width and depth. They depend on the free area of the room in which the appliance is to be installed. You should first measure the place for the fridge and then search for the appliance of suitable sizes.

Height. Determined based on the height of family members so that users don’t have to bend over too low or hardly reach the top shelves. The dimensions of the room are also taken into account. It is difficult to place a high fridge in a small room. The low height appliance, on the other hand, saves space.

Volume. It depends on the number of family members, the frequency with which the refrigerator is replenished, and the type of power supply. In a family that buys food and cooks daily, it’s convenient to use the appliance with a smaller volume. If you buy food for a month and cook for the whole week, you will need a bigger model.

Number of chambers. You should take into account what will be stored in the refrigerator and for how long. The choice of their location is based on the personal convenience of the user.

Defrosting method. The reason for this is the extent to which a person’s active participation in this process is planned.

Noise level. If the device is placed in a living room or a kitchen combined with a room, you should pay special attention to this indicator.

Climate class. The choice is based on where and how the refrigerator will be used.

Energy consumption class. Indicates the electricity consumed by the model.

The number of compressors and their type. This parameter affects the previous ones, noise level, and energy consumption. It’s responsible for durability and maintainability.

Control method. Determines the convenience and accuracy of temperature setting, switching the device on and off, and using additional functions.

Additional functions. For example, antibacterial coating, signal when the door isn’t closed, freshness zone.

Refrigerator design. It’s important to choose a model that will be combined with the interior in color and texture and won’t be out of style.

The main types of refrigerators

Appliances without a freezer. They are convenient for a country house or office, where there is no storage of frozen food.

Appliances with a freezer. Their functions allow you to store chilled food and small batches of frozen food. This is the most popular option in a modern apartment.

Freezers. Used for freezing vegetables, fruits, meat, and fish.

Wine cabinets. Adjusted for the storage of drinks.

Depending on a way of placing the fridges are divided into:

  • floor;
  • built-in;
  • desktop;
  • wall.

Specifications of refrigerators

You should learn about the specifications of refrigerators before you buy one of them.

Types of refrigerators according to the number of chambers:

  • single-chamber – the freezer chamber is absent or is located together with the refrigerating chamber behind one door;
  • two-chamber – refrigerating and freezer chambers are separated from each other, each has its own door;
  • multi-chamber – have from 3 to 6 chambers for separate storage of products with different requirements to the conditions of humidity and temperature.

There are the following defrosting systems for refrigerators:

  • Manual. All the contents of the refrigerator are removed, the power is switched off. After a few hours (1-12) the ice will melt, and the water will flow into the pallet. The fridge itself will need to be washed, dried, and powered on.

  • Drip. Condensate accumulates on the back wall, in which the evaporator is built, and freezes. During the breaks of compressor operation, it thaws. It’s led outwards through a drain hole to a special container where it dries. The drip system is not used in the freezers, so they have to be defrosted manually.

  • No frost. Cooling is done by the fan. The evaporator is outside the chamber, and the condensate accumulates there. With the help of a heater, it defrosts and comes out.

Compressor type and cooling system

Refrigerators differ in the way they are cooled.

  • Compressor fridges operate on the basis of the properties of compressed gas transported through special tubes with the help of a compressor.

  • Absorption fridges have an ammonia solution as a refrigerant that passes through the absorption chamber many times.

  • Thermoelectric fridges function on the basis of a semiconductor wafer, which is heated and cooled under the influence of electric current.

In domestic refrigerators, two main types of compressors are used:

  • linear one, which is switched on based on the temperature sensor readings, brings the cooling to the required temperature and switches off;

  • inverter one, which keeps the set temperature constant without disconnecting and periodically reduces the power.

Inverter models are considered quieter than linear models. They spend less electricity.

Compressor refrigerators differ in the cooling system:

  • Static. An evaporator is installed in the rear wall of the appliance. It’s cooled during compressor operation. The uneven temperature in the chamber and maintained humidity don’t allow the products to dry out.

  • No frost. The air for cooling enters the evaporator by means of a fan and then exits the chamber. The temperature is distributed evenly. The water remains outside the chamber on the evaporator, and the humidity of the products may raise.

  • Dynamic. It operates on the same principle as the static one but has a fan in the chamber to regulate the cooling airflow.

Climatic class and power consumption

The climatic class determines the conditions in which the device will be used:

  • usage temperature from +16 to +32 °С – normal (N);
  • usage temperature from +10 to +32 °С – subnormal (SN);
  • humid tropical climate from +18 to +38 °С – subtropical (ST);
  • dry tropical climate from +18 to +43 °С – tropical (T).

There are mixed classes focused on an extended temperature range:

  • +10 to +43 °С – SN-T;
  • +10 to +38 °С – SN-ST;
  • +16 to +43 °C – N-T;
  • +16 to +38 °С – N-ST.

The energy efficiency level of the appliance is determined by the energy consumption class. The manufacturer indicates it on the refrigerator case. It is denoted by letters from A+++ (lowest power consumption) to G (high power consumption).

Additional functions

Some models include additional functions such as:

  • freshness zone is a zone with zero temperature;
  • the antibacterial coating contains silver and prevents bacteria growth;
  • open door indicator works if you forget to close the door;
  • chilled water supply or ice maker;
  • built-in clock or TV set;
  • control panel or refrigerator door lock from children;
  • standalone cold storage works if there is no electricity;
  • vacation mode – you don’t need to switch off the device during your absence: it will be set to a constant temperature of +15 ° C;
  • supercooling or superfreezing – the selected function will be performed in the shortest possible time.

Single-chamber, double-chamber, and Side-by-Side fridges

The number and arrangement of chambers directly affect the functionality and efficiency of the appliance.

The single-chamber model means that the refrigerating and freezer chambers are located in the same compartment, separated by a partition and closed by a common door. The freezer is located above or below the refrigerator compartment. Some types of appliances don’t have it.

There’s only one compressor in this model, and it doesn’t run at full capacity, freezing takes a long time. Continuous opening of the door leads to strong icing of the walls. As a result, frequent defrosting is required if the No frost system isn’t available.

No additional functions are available. These fridges are up to 39 inches high and 21-24 inches wide. The volume does not exceed 300 liters.

The two-chamber models have two compartments: a separate refrigerator and freezer compartment, each has its own door. Two compressors can be used here. The optimum temperature is maintained in each compartment. There are models with the No frost system installed for each chamber.

The height of devices with two compartments reaches 83 inches. The width is about 24 inches. The volume is 250-400 l.

The freezer compartment is located above, below, or on the side of the refrigerator, parallel to it. Such models are called Side-by-Side. From the outside, they look like a two-door refrigerated cabinet, have two independent chambers and two compressors.

Side-by-Side refrigerators are characterized by increased capacity, up to 800 liters of volume. They are often equipped with a large number of additional functions. This appliance has many shelves for convenient placement of products. The widths range from 35 to 51 inches. The height reaches 87 inches.

Thermoelectric fridge: what is the secret to operation

These models are free of compressors, motors, gases, or liquids. The cooling of the chamber is done with the help of a flat element installed in it. On the reverse side, there is a second similar element. They are connected by special conductors. When an electric current passes through the conductors, the backplate is heated, and the one in the chamber is cooled. The cold plate absorbs heat from the food and air in the compartment and transmits it to the stabilizer, where it’s dissipated by a small fan.

Thermoelectric devices are characterized by low noise levels because they don’t have complex mechanisms that are constantly in operation. For the same reason, they are reliable, as moving and rubbing parts are not worn out. Such models are characterized by a high level of energy saving. The disadvantage is the low cooling speed.

Types of refrigerating chambers

They are different in functionality. They can be:

  • short-term fridges maintain the temperature from +8 to -2 ° C, allow you to store food for 3-7 days;

  • long-term ones where the temperature reaches -10 ° C and allows you to store already frozen food for up to 4 months;

  • freezer or cooler chamber freezes fresh food or quickly cools them at a temperature of -18 to -25 ° C;

  • shock freezing keeps the temperature no less than -30 ° C, there is a gradual decrease in temperature for freezing.

A zero chamber (or freshness zone) is also allocated. It’s used to extend the shelf life of products. Vegetables, fruits, chilled meat, and fish are stored in such conditions for longer periods.

How to Grill Meat: the Secrets of the Real Steak

How to Grill Meat: the Secrets of the Real Steak

Steak is not just fried meat. It is prepared exclusively from beef, but not every part of beef will do. In stores, you can buy special pieces of meat of thoroughbred bulls and calves, which are fed separately from the rest of the cattle. Steaks come in many forms, it all depends on the structure of the piece, the presence of veins and fat. For example, “T-bone steak” consists of fillet on the bone, and the famous “New York” steak is a strip loin, a loin piece of lumbar. It’s too long to learn the cooking techniques of each dish separately, so we will proceed to the basic rules of cooking.

EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT MEAT

According to https://grillfaq.com/, you can grill pork, lamb, and turkey using the steak technique. But none of these types of meat will become a real steak. Choose only beef – special pieces, loin parts of the lumbar, shoulder blades, and the least overloaded muscles. They will cost more than ordinary pieces, but the texture is significantly different. When frying, a regular piece will be dry and hard, a special piece will be soft and juicy.

Never fry fully defrosted meat. The meat should not be with ice, but not quite warm, about 37-38 degrees Fahrenheit. Take the pieces out of the refrigerator and be sure to do the following steps:

  • Beat with a meat mallet to the desired thickness. The standard size is about 5 mm.
  • Pat it with a cloth or paper towel to remove excess moisture.
  • Take olive or vegetable oil, and grease each side gently.
  • Add salt and pepper. You need to salt before frying, but you can do this when the piece is well cooked as well.
  • Send it to a hot grill.

If you still decide to buy a regular tenderloin, let the pieces marinate for several hours. We recommend red wine marinade, as for barbecue: for 1 kg of meat you will need 150 ml of table wine. Add onions, garlic, and spices. Leave for 1 hour. That way beef will become softer after roasting.

EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT COOKING TECHNIQUE

If you have a charcoal grill, take thicker slices, so that the meat does not quickly fries up. On electrical equipment, you need to set the temperature of Medium or Medium Rare – this is the optimal degree of frying for all gourmets. When cooking, remember one simple rule – parts of the grill should be equally heated, for this, evenly distribute the coal along the bottom of the frypot.

When the pieces of meat begin to fry, do not flip them over until the lower part is covered with a crust. During grilling, you can flip it over just once. Turn over with tongs or a metal spatula without piercing a piece. If you pierce or make a small incision, all the juice will run out and the dish will turn out dry. To check if the steak is ready, press on it with your finger. A well-cooked steak will be firm, rare or with blood – soft. When the dish is ready, put it on a warm plate and cover with foil. Let it sit for 10 minutes, and then it can be served. Fresh vegetables are harmoniously combined with it, make a simple salad of tomatoes and cucumbers, season with olive oil, and your picnic lunch is ready.

How to Choose the Right Dishwasher

How to Choose the Right Dishwasher

A modern kitchen is completely different from that of 20 years ago. The evolution of technological progress has led to such appliances as a washing machine, an oven, an electric kettle, a microwave, a fridge, a blender.

In this article, we will consider another major invention of modern life, which can save time and improve our lives, a dishwasher.

To choose the right dishwasher, we have to decide what we need it for and whether we need it at all. According to DishwaherFAQ, there are several reasons for purchasing:

  • Saving your personal time;
  • Washing dishes at any time, even when you are away from home;
  • No hot water required;
  • Significant savings: water consumption with a dishwasher is reduced by 3, 5, or more times compared to washing dishes by hand;
  • The ability to use powerful detergents that are not applicable when dishes are washed by hand;
  • Rinsing is carried out at a high temperature, which allows you to completely clean the surface of dishes from detergents.

At the same time, it’s necessary to mention some important disadvantages:

  • Price of a dishwasher. Each owner of the appliance will confirm that the purchase is worth it, but it’s up to you to decide.
  • It takes up space. You need to think in advance where to place another, not the smallest appliance with free access to the door, loading/unloading dishes.
  • Energy consumption of the dishwasher. It’s one of the most powerful among household appliances. An apartment or house should have secure wiring. Typically, the machine has sensors that detect the number of dishes and even contamination. The appliance itself detects the need for water and energy. When connecting to an external hot water source, it’s possible to save energy.
  • The dishes made of some materials cannot be washed in a dishwasher. This can include metal (made of tin, aluminum, copper), heat-resistant plastic, and wooden dishes.
  • Detergents for dishwashers. Now you need to use chemicals for washing dishes.

The dimensions of dishwashers

You can choose the right dishwasher first of all by size.

  • The standard dishwasher size can hold from 10 to 13 sets of dishes. It’s suitable for a family of 4-5 people. Such appliances usually have several modes and functions.
  • Narrow dishwashers are designed to hold less than 8-10 sets. Such dishwashers are perfect for owners of small kitchens. As a rule, they save from 10 to 15% of the budget.
  • There are also compact dishwashers that can hold up to 8 sets of dishes. They are suitable for small families and cottages, as well as for small kitchens. They can be installed in a hinged cupboard or on a table. However, before choosing this type of dishwasher, you should know that it’s equipped with the minimum functionality. Still, this is the most economical option that is suitable for families of up to 3 people. It’s impossible to wash a pan and a pot in such an appliance.

Types of dishwashers

There are two types:

  • built-in appliances;
  • freestanding.

Which dishwasher to choose? It all depends on the possibilities of the kitchen space and your preferences in terms of interior design. In any case, you should familiarize yourself with both models. Built-in dishwashers, in turn, are divided into fully and partially built-in, they differ in the location of the control panel.

Economical or powerful dishwasher?

Another important aspect is the power of a dishwasher. Manufacturers offer us seven energy classes, usually in Latin letters from A to G. Class A is the most economical, and class G represents the most powerful and energy-intensive devices. Usually, “D” to “G” dishwashers are old models or professional appliances.

Functionality of dishwashers

You should also take into account the functionality of your future dishwasher.

Standard functions are:

  • prewash;
  • washing with hot water and detergents;
  • rinsing with detergent;
  • drying dishes with hot air.

More expensive models are equipped with several operating modes, which greatly increase their functionality

  • intensive high-temperature washing up to 75 °C;
  • brittle dish mode 30-40 °C;
  • fast washing: rinsing after low-fat liquid food immediately after eating.

Some models can also be equipped with these features:

  • filtration and self-cleaning system,
  • waste crusher,
  • protection from children,
  • delaying the start,
  • height adjustment of the upper basket,
  • the Aqua Stop function,
  • partial load mode.

The dishwasher is connected to the water supply and sewerage system with special hoses. The distance to the sewerage system shouldn’t exceed 5 feet.

Which dishwasher is better: a built-in or freestanding?

Since you have decided to equip your kitchen with this latest technology, and the kitchen has enough space, it’s better to choose a built-in dishwasher. The kitchen will look better, and such models are usually more comfortable.

What to consider when choosing a dishwasher in a store

When you choose a dishwasher, make sure that the model has a complete set of equipment.

The standard built-in dishwasher includes:

  • dosing unit;
  • front door (open);
  • bottom basket;
  • upper basket;
  • air path of the drying system;
  • bottom sprayer;
  • upper sprayer;
  • cutlery basket;
  • pressure pump;
  • filter.

After that, make sure that the device is suitable for you in terms of functionality:

  • the height of the baskets can be adjusted and is big enough to wash large-size dishes;
  • the possibility of changing the tilt;
  • the chamber has internal lighting;
  • the possibility of fixing the door;
  • heat exchanger;
  • additional removable spray nozzles;
  • availability of self-cleaning filter (significantly saves water);
  • stainless steel elements;
  • screw supports (if you have an uneven floor).

Taking care of a dishwasher

A few tips that will extend the life of the machine are clean the filter from time to time, sometimes wash the baskets for dishes, use additional care products, wipe the case of your appliance.

Staggering Eight Burglaries in Andover this Week

Police are investigating following reports of eight house burglaries in Andover in the past week.

They took place between Saturday 26 October and Thursday 31 October.

The first incident was took place sometime between 8pm on Saturday at a house in Longstock Close. Entry was gained by a rear door and jewellery and money was stolen.

Further burglaries have been reported at houses in Millway Road, Chestnut Avenue, Tovey Court, South End Road, Leigh Road, Conholt Road and Celtic Drive.

Investigations in these incidents are underway and detectives are looking to see if these incidents are linked.

Inspector Chris Taylor said: “We know that burglaries have a significant impact on victims and the wider community, and burglary is currently a district priority for the Test Valley district.

“We are following several lines of enquiry as part of our investigations.

“Officers have also been conducting out house-to-house enquiries and carrying out patrols.

“I’d urge anyone with information on these incidents to come and speak to us by calling 101.”

Advice

We’d like to take this opportunity to remind people of the following crime prevention advice:

• Shut all windows and lock them when you are not using the room, at night and when you leave your property
• Lock all front and rear doors at night and when you are out. If you have a UPVC door with a multi-point lock ensure you lift the handle and lock it with the key. Remove the key after the door or window is locked.
• Put all car keys and other keys out of sight and not in reach of windows and letterboxes. It doesn’t take much for the keys to be hooked through the letterbox.
• Leave a light on so your home looks occupied if you are going out for the evening. If you head out while it is still daylight and won’t be back till after dark then timer switches (available from most DIY stores) can be useful for turning your lights, radios and other appliances on at a set time before you get back.
• Ensure side gates are locked to prevent access to the rear of the property.
• Do not leave ladders and garden tools in your garden; lock them away in your shed.
• Have an intruder alarm system installed by an approved contractor. Ensure a visible alarm box is attached to the outside of your home. Also consider fitting security lighting.
• Use door chains and spy holes to give you extra security if someone knocks on your door. Never be afraid to turn people away. If you have concerns about anyone who has come to your door call the police.
• Record the details of your property such as serial numbers for electronic goods on the Immobilise website
