Councillor Karen Hamilton was elected as the borough’s new Mayor at Test Valley Borough Council’s annual Council meeting on Wednesday, 11 May 2016.
Councillor Hamilton has held the role of Deputy Mayor for the past year, in which she represented the borough and supported outgoing Mayor, Councillor Iris Andersen, in her civic duties. She said: “I am delighted and proud to accept the role of Mayor. I’d like to thank everyone who has supported me during the past year and encouraged me to believe in myself. I am looking forward to continuing to represent the borough, supporting charities and meeting the public at community events.”
Councillor Andersen added: “I have thoroughly enjoyed my year as Mayor. I’ve been lucky enough to be part of some very special events and I have met lots of different people in the community. One of my highlights has got to be at a recent visit to a school when I met a young girl who struggled with dyslexia. I told her that I also suffered with the condition, but that I didn’t let it beat me, and through sheer determination I was still able to reach my goals. I am very passionate about encouraging people to believe in themselves. I’ve known Councillor Hamilton for many years and I wish her the best of luck in her new role.”
The new mayor’s first civic duty was to attend a picnic at St Michael’s Church, Andover, on Saturday, 14 May, to celebrate the Queen’s birthday.
Councillor Carl Borg-Neal was elected Deputy Mayor of Test Valley at the meeting.
