Education News | National Apprenticeship Scheme Promoted by TVBC | Andover & VillagesAs part of National Apprenticeship Week, Test Valley Borough Council’s apprentices have been promoting their scheme to local schools, encouraging young people to choose apprenticeships as a pathway to a great career.

National Apprenticeship Week 2018 is a Government initiative which runs from Monday 5 to Sunday 9 March, to promote and celebrate the success of apprenticeship. This year’s theme is ‘Apprenticeships Work’.

Our apprentices have been working in local schools over the last month delivering workshops to raise awareness of apprenticeships and to give insight into what it is like to be an apprentice. We have also been working with a local community group supporting an apprenticeship project.

Leader of the Council, Councillor Phil North said “Apprenticeships provide on the job training and valuable work experience whilst studying for a recognised qualification. “We believe apprentices are a vital part of our workforce enabling us to develop and grow our future Council employees.

“Over the past 18 months, we’ve increased the number of apprentices we employ and have developed our apprenticeship programme further. We are working with three other Councils in the Hampshire Apprentice Partnership (HAP) to share best practice and to enhance the skills and opportunities available to our apprentices.”

Our apprentices all have a mentor, attend skills sessions and have the opportunity to work together on a project. They are supported to develop within their roles and we have a good success rate in apprentices finding employment with the Council or another employer.

We have a number of apprenticeship vacancies each year in a range of departments. These have included in the past: HR, Customer Services, Environmental Services, Estates and Economic Development, Finance, Housing and Environmental Health and Revenues.

We will be recruiting mid -May to June for new apprenticeships to start in September.
