Harrow Way Community School is celebrating the news that two of their students have put Andover on the map at the English Schools’ Athletics Association (ESAA) Championships. Competing at the Alexander Stadium in Birmingham Year 9 student Adam Robinson took medal honours with a Silver in the high jump, leaping 1.84m and Year 9 Beth Matthews hit a personal best in the hammer throwing a huge 42.01m, securing fifth place.
The ESAA National Championship is the fourth largest athletics event in the World. Each county selects a number of athletes for each sporting discipline to compete for the honour of being the best in the England. Adam and Beth earned their place as Hampshire’s overall top performers at the high jump and hammer.
When not representing Harrow Way or Hampshire, Adam and Beth train at Andover Athletics Club. Commenting on their achievement Assistant Curriculum Leader for PE, Karen Winnett said: “We are all delighted and proud of Adam and Beth’s success at the ESAA National Championships. To be the best in Hampshire is a tremendous achievement in itself but to go on and compete against the very best in the country is simply fantastic. Despite the significance of the occasion both students held their nerve, gave it their best and were superb.”
Following Adam’s success at national level Harrow Way have confirmed their intention to purchase their own high jump bed ready for next summer term.
