M3 junctions 2 (M25) to 4a Farnborough, Hampshire: smart motorway improvement

The M3 in Surrey and Hampshire reopened as a smart motorway on Monday 31 July. The hard shoulder has been converted to a new fourth traffic lane in each direction on a 13.4 mile section of the motorway between junction 4a for Farnborough and junction 2 for the M25, and cutting-edge technology sets the speed limit to match conditions, helps spot any queuing traffic, incidents or broken down vehicles, and informs drivers about conditions ahead.

We are continuing to carry out additional maintenance work at this location. There will be a lanes 1 and 2 overnight closure on the southbound M3 junction 3-4 on Friday 26 January between 9pm – 6am. And we will also need to close lanes 1 and 2 overnight from Friday 26 to Sunday 28 January between 9pm – 5.30am on the slips and link roads northbound and southbound between the M3 junction 2 and the M25.

Safety at roadworks

Highways England is working with the industry and road users to reduce the risks of working on the roads. For the safety of road workers and all road users, when you are approaching roadworks:

Keep within the speed limit – it is there for your safety.

Get into the correct lane in good time – don’t keep switching.

Concentrate on the road ahead, not the roadworks.

Be alert for works’ traffic leaving or entering roadworks.

Keep a safe distance – there could be queues in front.

Observe all signs – they are there to help you.

And be alert for road workers, the roads are their workplace.
