Local Charity First Recipient Of Sovereign’s Medal The Sovereign’s Medal of Merit is awarded only in the case of exceptional merit and has not been awarded before. It is therefore an enormous honour for DMWS to be the first ever recipient.

John Stokoe, Chairman of the DMWS Board of Trustees said “We are absolutely delighted to have been honoured with such a prestigious award. It is a real reflection of the hard work our welfare officers do and the enormous difference that they have made to the lives of the Armed Forces Community over the past 72 years, a difference they will continue to make’”.

Since 1943, DMWS have provided support to over a million serving members of the Armed Forces, veterans and their family members across the UK, and overseas. They are the only military charity to deploy alongside troops to areas of conflict and have deployed to every major conflict since World War 2. Support can range from helping patients and their families come to terms with a life changing injury or illness through to practical support such as organising transport and accommodation for visiting relatives.
