Lady Does Lunch at The Chalkhill Blue in AndoverWe decided to go to The Chalkhill Blue, at the request of a Birthday Boy in the family. I phoned up and booked a table and, whilst a busy time of the year, the staff were able to accommodate us.

We arrived a few minutes before the booking and were taken to our table by Manager Sean Vernall. Our drinks order was taken by our waitress for the evening, Zoe, who was very polite and helpful.

Zoe soon returned with our drinks and came back to take our food order. There were five of us and all of our orders had something slightly different from what was written on the menu, so it was tricky.

Everyone wanted to try starters, but we were sad to see that the Mozzarella Balls were no longer on the menu. We ordered a Corn on the Cob (£1.60), two Garlic Breads (£1.80 each), and the Nachos with Pulled Pork and Chilli to share (£5.95).

The mains ordered were two Jerk Chicken Burgers (£8.65 each), the Yee Ha! Burger(£9.85), Steak Burger with Monteray Jack Cheese and Crispy Bacon (£9.85 each) and a half chicken with Garlic Mushroom Sauce (£9.45).

We had a very small wait until the starters arrived and they looked and smelled delicious. The corn on the cob was piping hot and had butter provided to melt along the top, which it did perfectly. The corn was firm and juicy and burst in the mouth. The garlic bread was fresh and hot with a slight garlic taste. The Nachos were delicious, and the tortillas at the bottom of the dish were smothered in a beautiful spicy chilli and pulled pork, in a smoky BBQ sauce, topped with melted cheese. Served with three dips, a salsa, a guacamole and a sour cream, this was delicious and has the Andover & Villages thumbs up!

The plates were cleared away quickly after we had finished eating and we had some time to chat and order more drinks, which, as always, arrived promptly.

The main courses arrived and the burgers were all served in bowls on a trendy greaseproof paper. One of my guests did not like the bowl and so we asked for a plate, which the waitress fetched immediately. It was no trouble and was a mere personal preference to eat from a plate. The rest of us ate our burgers from the bowl without trouble.

The Jerk Chicken Burger was filled with two succulent chicken breasts. It was impossible to eat both in the bun at the same time. The Jerk sauce was hot, but not too hot; it had a nice warmth with a small kick. The bacon was, as promised, crispy and the Monterey Jack Cheese was oozing from the bun. It was served with coleslaw, big fat chips and salad.

The Yee Ha! Burger, towered with a Prime Steak Burger, Pulled Pork, Beef Chilli and Monterey Jack Cheese, was quite a handful and not for the faint-hearted. The steak really was the star of the burger, with its strong meaty flavour complimented with the other fillings. Fresh and tasty, if you like beef in a burger, this is the one for you. It was served with coleslaw and onion rings.

The Half Roast Chicken was moist and juicy, fresh with great flavour. The Garlic Mushroom sauce was perfect and creamy and added an interesting dimension to the chicken. It was served with chips and corn on the cob.

In the Steak Burger, towered with a Prime Steak Burger, Bacon and Monterey Jack Cheese, the steak, as with the Yee Ha! Burger, really was the star of the meal. The good meaty taste was truly complimented by the salty bacon and creamy cheese. Fresh and tasty, it was served with coleslaw and onion rings.

We could not possibly have managed a pudding after all the food we had eaten, so we paid the bill and went home with full tummies.

I am giving the Chalkhill Blue a GOLD award for their fresh, tasty food and fantastic service!
