Hampshire Police and Insurance companies are warning social media users to not announce their holiday plans on-line.
The Financial Ombudsman is concerned that many policy holders do not realise that insurers may check their social media accounts.
It warns that anyone who does not keep their details private is particularly at risk of having their claims denied.
Alex McDonald (Hampshire Police, PCSO, Battins and West Leigh) said, “Think twice before announcing your family holiday on Facebook or even posting pictures while you’re away, as it could invalidate your home contents and building insurance, if you’re then burgled.
“Some firms check their customers social media accounts after a break in to see if they have announced they wouldn’t be at home- and they’re using it as a reason not to pay out. Policyholders are required to take reasonable care to protect their property.”
