Christmas Card Design by Winton Community Academy Student

A Christmas card design by a 12 year old student from Winton Community Academy has been chosen by Sir George Young Bt CH MP to be his official Christmas card this year.

Year 7 pupil Sabine Novikova’s design features St Mary’s church in the town with Santa Claus flying over it.

The Christmas card competition was organised by the Test Valley Arts Foundation and involved schools the Foundation has connections with. Test Valley Arts Foundation was looking for interesting artwork on the theme of Christmas landscapes to form the design, using their local landscape for inspiration.

Twelve designs were shortlisted and the winning design was chosen by Sir George as he said it depicted a wonderful Christmas scene.

“I am very grateful to Test Valley Arts Foundation and to all the children who entered the competition,” said Sir George.

Sabine’s first inspiration for her design, a Christmas tree and presents, she decided wasn’t enough and added children playing with a snowman. “I felt the design was fragmented,” she said. “I asked my family for advice and came up with my final design.”

Sabine decided to add Santa Claus flying through the air and after discussing the design with her mum, she thought it would be better that Santa was flying over prominent buildings in Andover. Sabine chose St Mary’s church as a focal point rather than as a prominent building.

“I have been in lots of churches in the past and St. Marys had a profound effect on me because the colours in the stained glass windows and atmosphere within the church. I also think that St Mary’s church reflects Andover at Christmas so I designed the church with the light shining out of the windows, to make it look as if the Christmas service was on,” said Sabine.

As the Christmas card design winner Sabine will receive a prize of art materials and see her winning design as a professionally printed Christmas card.

“I am delighted that Sabine’s design was chosen by Sir George,” said Winton Community Academy principal Nathan Thomas. “It’s great to know that Sabine’s design will be on cards on people’s mantle pieces all over Andover this Christmas.”
