SUN-WORSHIPPING Brits are making the most of the recent unexpected UK heatwaves by taking their favourite physical exercises outdoors, according to new research.

The survey of 1,331 adults carried out by garden and conservatory furniture e-tailer Alfresia, revealed that 1 in 5 (21%) of Brits have in fact re-organised their garden – by creating more open space and stocking up on equipment that can be used outdoors – to allow them to bring their regular fitness regimes outside.

Keen to soak up the sun more than half (59%) would rather replace their indoor gym session with some outdoor training.

Whilst football was the top form of exercise Brits are enjoying doing in the garden (78%), 62% are using the space to carry out strength-building activities, such as weights and mat work.

What’s more, 45% are embracing alfresco Pilates or yoga, whilst 27% are doing outdoor HIIT classes.

18% are even using their outdoor space to carry out circuit training sessions.

Nic Jones, head of digital at, said: “It’s brilliant that so many Brits are finding additional ways to utilise their outdoor space – an outdoor area is about so much more than just being a place to sit and read or enjoy alfresco dining and we believe it is a place to live and improve our lifestyles.

“Exercising outdoors is a great way to soak up that much-needed vitamin D, whilst getting plenty of light and fresh air to get those endorphins flowing. Although revamping your outdoor space seems like a big task, it needn’t be costly or time consuming and can literally be a case of clearing some space and creating a shaded area for when you need it.

“Even those with smaller outdoor spaces, such a simple patio or balcony can invest in a fitness mat and carry out a morning stretch session or quick cardio class after a day in the office – the options are endless and you’re guaranteed to feel so much better for it”.

More than 1 in 5 (22%) have also made their outdoor training a social event, by inviting rounds friends or family to train with them.

Those living in Leeds (52%) were the group most likely to enjoy garden workouts, followed by those living in Southampton (49%).
