British Actor Donates family Lego Collection to Hampshire County Council’s New LibraryHugh Bonneville, star of ‘Downton Abbey’, ‘Mr Stink’ and ‘Paddington’, has kindly donated his family Lego collection to Hampshire County Council’s New Milton library, thanks to a conversation with library staff.

Staff at New Milton library heard Hugh on BBC Radio 4’s Desert Island Discs, admitting that he needed to sort through the vast Lego collection, and knew they could help him out.

The Lego bricks will be enjoyed by 4-11 year olds at the popular Construction Club, which will be held fortnightly from September, in New Milton Library.

Councillor Andrew Gibson, Hampshire County Council’s Executive Member for Culture, Recreation and Countryside, said: “The library staff got in touch with Hugh, and it was a pleasant surprise when they received a call to set up a date to pay them a visit. We’re very grateful that Hugh could come down with the family Lego and I know the staff and children at New Milton library were thrilled to meet him.”

Construction Clubs are a popular feature at many libraries throughout Hampshire – giving children an opportunity to make new friends, develop their motor skills and have fun by turning their ideas into reality with Lego and Duplo. Many operate on a drop-in basis, so no need to book ahead. New Milton’s club will run every other Thursday from 4.30pm to 6pm from September. If you know any budding architects, engineers, or anyone who wants to join in the fun, your local library will have all the details.

Children can also sign up to this year’s Summer Reading Challenge, the Big Friendly Read at Hampshire libraries, and join over 21,000 children who are reading six books to get a medal and a certificate, by 18 September. Those children who finish the Summer Reading Challenge will also be given the chance to design a brand new library card which will be used by thousands of children across all Hampshire libraries.
