Photographs by Andover College Art student, Jess Ngombe have been selected for the national exhibition, Shine for Shelter. Set in the heart of Brighton, the exhibition provides a platform for debuting artists to display their work as well as raising money for charity.
Born and raised in Botswana until her early teens, Jess explains how issues of racism and equality are often revealed in her urban portraits, including those exhibited recently. Jess said: “My work is focused on issues surrounding the Black Lives Matter movement, exploring both working class and city life through capturing architecture and human form. I photograph the majority of my content in London, a city I love and hope to attend university in following my studies at Andover College.”
Jess attributes the confidence to put herself forward for the exhibition and other industry opportunities to the open-plan, shared studios at the College, which she describes as a great confidence booster. “I can explore new processes, be inspired by the work of my peers and through trial and error, learn what creative outlets I’m particularly interested in such as photography and 3D design. The support and encouragement from lecturers is also fantastic so I feel able to actively pursue external prospects with their expert guidance” she said.
One of Jess’s advisors, Art and Design lecturer Carlie Forsyth said: “The Level 3 Extended Art and Design course is well suited to Jess as it delivers a wide range of art and design subjects to fuel her curiosity and imagination. She is able to explore and expand on her creativity, as well as applying the skills she learnt at the College last year during her GCSE Photography course. She works hard independently to produce and develop her practice, so it is a great reward to not only see her have the confidence to apply for exhibitions outside her studies, but to see her succeed in these endeavours too.”
The Shine for Shelter exhibition is in aid of Shelterbox, a charity who create aid boxes for families affected by natural disasters around the world.
