Bradbury Place wins Richard Feilden Award at 2015 Housing Design AwardsLeading Hampshire-based disability charity Enham Trust, in collaboration with Winchester architects Design Engine, has won the Richard Feilden Award at the 2015 Housing Design Awards for the Bradbury Place development in Andover town centre.

Bradbury Place was recognised as the best example of housing enabled by the HCA (Homes and Communities Agency) at a ceremony held at the London School of Economics Saw See Hock Building on Monday evening (13th July).

This year is the 67th year of the Housing Design Awards. From 153 entries, a total of 59 schemes were shortlisted, with judges selecting just 15 for Awards.

Bradbury Place has been specially designed to provide eight one and two bedroom wheelchair-accessible apartments, within 500 meters of the town-centre of Andover.

At the heart of this project lies Enham Trust’s vital work; supporting as many disabled and disadvantaged people as possible to live lives of choice and independence.

Enham Trust identified this site as one which, when developed, would bring people living with disabilities closer to Andover and thus offer its clients better access to shops and services, present greater opportunity for them to find suitable work, and therefore achieve greater self-reliance.

Working within the constraints of a challenging site, Design Engine delivered a commercially viable scheme which meets all the clients’ requirements. All of the apartments are fully accessible and cater for the needs of wheelchair users according to current design standards for this type of accommodation.

Victoria Leesam, Property Regeneration Executive, Enham Trust, said “We wanted to design Bradbury Place as somewhere that would support those people living with a disability to live the lives they choose. Throughout the whole design process we encouraged disabled people to have a say, this helped us to develop homes which truly catered for their needs.”

Rodney Graham, Director of Design Engine said “We are thrilled that this tremendously worthwhile project has been recognised by the Housing Design Awards – fully deserved affirmation for the outstanding service provided by the Enham Trust.”
