Education News | Big Guns Come to Local College | Andover & VillagesThe Royal Navy’s UTC liaison team visited South Wiltshire UTC recently to promote this year’s Junior Leaders Field Gun Competition being held at HMS Collingwood in July.

They brought along a Field Gun and Limber and the students got to experience a few of the competition tasks including loading and firing the gun!

The competition has its roots in the Boer War when the Royal Navy landed guns from HMS Terrible and Powerful to support the Army in lifting the siege of the Ladysmith Garrison.

A team of 24 students from South Wiltshire UTC, supported by Salisbury 6th Form College will join 30 other UTCs and schools in this year’s competition. They will get to experience Navy life and live aboard HMS Bristol, spending four days training for the event before competing in front of 2500 spectators and dignitaries.

The Junior Leaders’ competition enables young people to experience this great Royal Naval tradition, as well as the teamwork, leadership and discipline it encapsulates.
