Frankie’s Festival of Fun took place today at Andover Football Club, New Street, to raise awareness & to educate the general public about Downʼs Syndrome.
The charity event, organised by Donna Jackson, was attended by the worshipful mayor of Test Valley, and was in aid of Downʼs Syndrome Association and Andover’s local charity, Acorns.
Acorns Children Centre, Vigo Road, who provide services for children, helps to support the parents & children with Downʼs syndrome and are a valuable resource for those in Andover, who have children living with the condition. Down syndrome is a genetic condition causing, usually, a level of learning disability and it has a characteristic range of physical features. It is estimated around 750 babies are born with the condition in the UK every year. There is no ʻcureʼ for Downʼs syndrome, however, there are ways to help children develop into healthy & fulfilled individuals who can achieve a level of independence. It seems that improved education & support is the best way to provide these opportunities to people living with Down syndrome (NHS Choices)
Todayʼs event was fun-filled, with activities for all including: face painting, tombola, birthday buddies, bouncy castle, arts & crafts, a raffle and much more besides. The raffle prizes were kindly donated by local businesses in & around Andover, and the support from the community to help with this cause it seems has been wonderful.
Donna Jackson has been instrumental in the planning of this event, to help provide information to others around Andover and its Villages affected by Down Syndrome, as her and her husband have a baby girl with Downʼs Syndrome called Francessca, who is 5 months old.
The event appeared very successful in fundraising for the chosen charities, but more importantly achieved the aim of helping people develop an understanding of Downʼs Syndrome.
