Budding bodybuilders and power lifters from Andover have been preparing their bodies in a bid to be this year’s fitness champs.

The Valley Leisure fitness expo is set to take place at Andover Leisure Centre on Saturday [18th April]. It includes a series of competitions throughout the day for members.

Valley Leisure member Richard Lowe, aged 20, from Andover has been in training for the bodybuilding event. He said: “I took part in the expo last year as a power lifter but thought I would try bodybuilding this time. It’s challenging as my diet has completely changed and training is more about reps than it is weights – unlike power lifting.”

“I like the Fitness Expo because it is a local event that is ideal for novices. With it being a member’s only event, the number of competitors is much smaller than the bigger expos across the country, which is nice.”

Alongside the bodybuilding and power lifting contests is the arduous fitness challenge. This involves a series of tests entitled ‘Spartan’ that push competitors to their limits.

Kevin Paterson of Valley Leisure said: “Having taken part in the expo myself, I know how difficult training can be for our competitors.

“The level of talent that we have come though our doors on a daily basis is outstanding, and I think that this event is a great platform for those who want to show off their achievements.”

Members and non-members can watch the competition. They can also take a tour of the facilities.
