Huge celebrations are underway at Harrow Way today as the school notches up its best GCSE results ever with 9% improvement from last year and staggering 16% improvement since Headteacher Mike Serridge joined the school two years ago. Ten of its top students achieved a clean sweep of A* and A’s in at least 10 subjects.

The overall pass rate of the achieving five GCSE grade A* to C passes including Maths and English – is now 63% and 70% achieved those coveted five GCSEs. These impressive figures put Harrow Way in the top 20% of schools nationally for the progress that students have made between Year 7 to Year 11.

Maths and English achieved some stunning results. English A* to C grades are up to 84%, an incredible improvement of 25% since 2012 and Maths A* to C grades are up to 68%. These excellent results are set against a national decrease in pass rates as the exams have become more rigorous. All testament to the high standards of teaching at the school as validated by Ofsted last year. The other English Baccalaureate subjects also performed superbly with 71% A* to C for geography, 90% A* to C for French, 85% A* to C for Spanish and 78% A* to C for Additional Science.

Many staff joined the students as they collected their results to share the moment and a delighted Headteacher Michael Serridge said, “I don’t even know where to start. I am so proud of everyone, and these results show that we have created an environment for learning that words. Our students have shown they are committed to their own achievement and of course the staff have demonstrated their exceptional teaching talent – the progress made is excellent. As for our top 10 – what an amazing achievement for them all to have achieved 10 grade A/A* grades is no easy feat and these talented pupils should be very pleased.”

These are the second GCSEs under Michael Serridge’s headship and during 2014 the school focused on a number of key objectives, which have contributed considerably to the GCSE performance.

Mr Serridge reflected on the huge improvement in standards in such short time, commenting, “I am hugely proud to have been part of such a phenomenal shift in standards. Harrow Way is a real community school where learning and achievement are valued and students are happy and engaged with their work. We value highly the positive relationships we build with out pupils, and their individual success means a huge amount to all the staff. The achievement of our pupils is also a reflection of the support of their parents, and everyone is to be congratulated.”

Within the overall results there were a number of individual success stories. There were 10 students who opened up envelopes with some quite remarkable results. These students are celebrating an incredible A/A* grades, namely Robbie Taylor, Elle Campbell, Jade Goddard, Georgina Hudson, Abbey Pearson, Ellie Potter, Rahul Jagarlapudi, Ellie Thomas, Mark Todd, Maya Loaiza, all of whom have benefited from the initiatives which have contributed considerably to the GCSE performance.
