The Rotary Club in Andover were bequeathed £5,000 in the will of Jean Locke, who died on 11 Jan 2010, who left it in their safe hands for the purpose of funding a project for the community that would benefit Andover residents.
The ‘Rotarians’ set about brainstorming a project and felt that, after the Andover Bandstand in Vigo Park had fallen into disrepair and had been dismantled, that there was something lacking locally. Plans were set afoot to bring back an area to the park that schools and organisations can utilise to perform on.
The Rotary Club contacted Test Valley Borough Council, who were already making plans to redevelop Vigo Park, and so took on the actual role of undertaking the work involved to complete the performance area, and the Rotary Club handed over £6,000 to pay for it.
The performance area is made up of a mosaic roundel with the Rotary symbol in the centre.
In the Autumn, the Anton Rotary Club will undertake planting around the area.
On Sunday 24th August 2014, the grand opening of the performance area was undertaken by the Mayor of Test Valley Borough Council, Jan Lovell, with a selection of the Test Valley Brass Band performing beautifully afterwards.
