A moving ceremony attended by well over 100 people was held at St Mary’s church, Andover to mark the beginning of the First World War.
The service was taken by the Canon John Harkin who was supported by a number of members of the congregation who read poems. Before and during the service, live music from the era was played by the Andover Town Band. The congregation was clearly touched when Barbara Long and John Harkin read out loud the 213 names on the Andover War Memorial. Two hymns were sung heartily, the first was Abide With Me and the second, I Vow To Thee My Country.
The congregation then left the church with lighted candles to assemble by the War Memorial for a candlelit vigil. A bugler sounded the Last Post which was followed by two minutes silence. After the Reveille Brian Page read the Ode of Remembrance whereupon all the candles were extinguished and the congregation quietly left.
Lights out at Over Wallop on the evening of 4th August 2014
