Lights Out Candlelit Commemoration

Andover news - LIGHTS OUT – candlelit commemoration

Test Valley Borough Council will be part of the national LIGHTS OUT project on 4 August to commemorate 100 years since the start of the First World War.

Buildings all across the country will turn off their lights for an hour of shared reflection of the Great War from 10pm.

To mark this poignant time, the Council will turn off the lights at key buildings and leave just one single light showing as a focus of remembrance.  The Guildhall, Beech Hurst, The Lights Theatre, Andover Leisure Centre, Crosfield Hall, The Former Magistrates’ Court and Romsey Rapids will all be in darkness except for a single point of light acting as a beacon of shared reflection.

LIGHTS OUT will be one of the largest participatory events of its kind ever seen in the UK, and will complement the candlelit vigil held at Westminster Abbey on 4 August.

Councillor Ian Carr, Leader of the Council said:  “LIGHTS OUT recreates the time when people were besieged by the dark days of war.  Test Valley Borough Council is honoured to be a part of this event which encourages reflection and respect for those who fought.

“I would urge as many people as possible to take part in the LIGHTS OUT commemoration in their own homes between 10 – 11pm on 4 August.”
