Four people are in custody this morning following a report of a burglary at a Calne newsagent.

At approximately 2.30am, we received a call that a burglary was in progress at the newsagent next to Lloyds bank on the High Street.

Officers arrived on scene within minutes and received another report that a vehicle was making off at speed from the car park at the back of The Pippin.

The vehicle was spotted heading along Curzon Street, towards Studley Crossroads and past Derry Hill in the direction of Chippenham. During this time, a number of items were seen to be thrown from the vehicle into the road.

The vehicle was stopped in Stanley Lane and the four male occupants, aged 18, 20, 21 and 24 from the Andover area, were arrested on suspicion of burglary and possession of cannabis.

All four remain in Melksham custody at this time.

North Wiltshire Community Policing Team Inspector Mark Luffman said: “This is an excellent example of officers being on scene within minutes and working together to locate the individuals suspected of being responsible for the burglary.

“Our enquiries will continue in to the burglary to establish what, if anything, was stolen and we’d be keen to hear from anyone who may have seen or heard any suspicious behaviour in the High Street in Calne in the early hours of this morning.

“Finally, I’d like to thank the vigilant member of the public who alerted us to the incident when banging was heard coming from the newsagents – reporting incidents in progress is crucial so we can respond immediately.”

Anyone with information should call police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
