The Andover Farmers’ & Craft Market was a new entity in the Andover High Street this weekend, being rebranded and relaunched by the Test Valley Borough Council leading Star, Heather Whittam, who is currently one of the main movers and shakers in the Andover area. Heather is most well known for running The Lights in Andover, but also organises events, such as the Christmas Lights Switch On.

Sunday 16th March saw one of the busiest Sunday’s in Andover Town from recent times. The car parks were packed full, with queues forming to get a space and the High Street was bustling with shoppers, as the fantastic uplifting voices of the ‘Sing for Fun’ Choir danced in the warm March air.

Heather told Andover & Villages that her aim, for the new markets, was to get as many pitches occupied to encourage footfall and visitors in to not only buy from the market, but also to use and visit the local shops that had chosen to stay open. The market was a non-profit making one with stalls going for only £10 per pitch.

Councillor Iris Anderson was busy walking amongst the crowds asking people to fill out questionnaires about their experience of that day’s market and the town, returning with handfuls of filled out paper that indicated visitors were not only using the market, but the open shops as well.

The market was a great success, not only for the traders and visitors, but for the whole town, you can visit the next one in the High Street on Sunday 18th May 2014.
