Volunteers Week is a national celebration to thank the many thousands of volunteers across the country for their huge contribution to the communities in which they live. Volunteer Week has traditionally been the time for organisations, large and small, to acknowledge their volunteers in some way. The celebrations are traditionally during the first week of June, but in reality, owing to the part-time nature of their staff, many charities find the events spill over to dates later in June.
This is the case in Test Valley when Test Valley Community Services (TVCS), which runs the Test Valley Volunteer Centre, will be holding Volunteer Recruitment Events across the Borough. An event at the Town Hall in Romsey on Monday 8th June will be followed by another at The Rendezvous, Union Street, Andover, on Thursday 11th June.
Potential volunteers are invited to drop in to chat to a variety of charities who will be attending to talk about volunteer opportunities with their organisations. The Volunteer Centre will also be there to give information about some of the other vacancies in the area. There is no need to make an appointment, just call in between 10am and 1pm to find out how you can help your local community by giving just a little of your time.
“The value of volunteers and the contribution they make to so many of our local community groups cannot be overstated,” says Tessa Makepeace, Volunteer Centre Manager. “Without their help many vulnerable groups would not be supported and countless activities would not take place. Our own Community Transport Scheme has around 60 volunteer drivers whose help is invaluable in keeping fare costs to a minimum – but we really need more, especially for driving the accessible cars. Volunteers are needed for a wide variety of tasks across Test Valley and this event will be a good way to find out what is out there. ”
“The services of the Volunteer Centre are free and available to non-profit making organisations, which means we can promote volunteer roles across the area for no charge,” Tessa said. “People volunteer for many different reasons and there is usually an opportunity to suit everybody.”
