Find the latest traffic disruptions for A303, A34 and M3 here

The following summary of planned new and ongoing road improvements over the coming week is correct as of Friday 5 July but could be subject to change due to weather conditions or unforeseen circumstances. All our improvement work is carried out with the aim of causing as little disruption as possible. 

A34 Newbury to Tot Hill, West Berkshire: road markings 

Work to improve journeys by renewing the road markings along the A34 continues this week. The A34 southbound will be closed from the A339 link at Donnington to the B4640 Tot Hill junction overnight, between 9pm and 6am, from Monday 8 July for 4 nights. A signed diversion will be in place via the A339, Newbury and the B4640.

A34 Oxford to Didcot, Oxfordshire: road markings 

Work to improve journeys by renewing the road markings along the A34 continues this week. The A34 southbound will be closed from the A420 Botley Interchange (Oxford) to the A4130 Milton Interchange (Didcot) overnight, between 9pm and 6am, from Monday 8 July for four nights. A signed diversion will be in place via the A420, A338 and A417.

A303 Bullington Cross to Andover, Hampshire: road markings 

Work to improve journeys by renewing the road markings along the A303 continues this week. The westbound carriageway from the A34 (Bullington Cross) to the A3057 (Andover) will be closed overnight, between 10pm and 6am, from Monday 8 July for four nights. A signed diversion will be in place via Sutton Scotney, Stockbridge and the A3057.

A308(M) Maidenhead, Berkshire: safety barrier 

Work to ensure road user safety by replacing the safety barrier along the central reservation of the A308(M) continues this week. Narrow lanes and a 40mph speed limit are in place on both carriageways until Friday 19 July.

The A308(M) southbound will be closed overnight, between 9pm and 6am, until Friday 12 July (Monday to Friday only). A signed diversion will be in place via the A308, A4 and A404(M).

M3 junction 9 Winchester, Hampshire: drainage 

Work to ensure road user safety by maintaining the drainage system at junction 9 finishes this week. The M3 southbound will be closed between the exit and entry slip roads overnight, between 9pm and 6am, on Monday 8 July. Traffic will be diverted up and across the junction.

In addition, the northbound exit and entry slip roads at the junction will be closed overnight, between 9pm and 6am, on Tuesday 9 July. Signed diversions will be in place via the adjacent junctions.

M4 junctions 8/9 at Maidenhead to 10 at Wokingham, Berkshire: upgrade to smart motorway 

Work to improve journeys by converting the M4 into a smart motorway between junctions 3 at Hayes to junction 12 at Theale continues this week. 24-hour narrow lanes and a 50mph speed restriction are in place for sections of this stretch of the M4. Carriageway and slip road closures are planned as follows, all fully closed overnight between approximately 10pm and 5am (traffic management will usually be rolled out from 9pm and taken off by 6am).

Full closures booked for the week commencing Monday 8 July are as follows:

  • The M4 eastbound between junctions 10 (Wokingham) and 8/9 (Maidenhead) will be closed overnight on Monday 8, Tuesday 9, Wednesday 10 and Thursday 11 July. Clearly signed diversions will be in place utilising the A329M, A3290, A4 and A404M

There are no additional slip road closures currently booked.

In the event of poor weather conditions or other issues out of our control, planned work may be postponed at short notice. Contingency bookings are also in place, but these are only used if previously planned work is delayed and there is no clash with other closures. If work completes on an earlier day the motorway may not close, or if work completes ahead of schedule the motorway may reopen early. Signage will be in place on the network to notify of closures and diversions.

M4 junction 13 Chieveley, West Berkshire: roundabout resurfacing 

Work to improve journeys and road users’ safety reconstructing the surface of the roundabout at junction 13 continues this week. The roundabout and approach roads from the A34 and M4 will be closed from 10pm on Friday 12 July through to 6am on Monday 15 July.

Various signed diversions will be in place primarily using the A4 between junctions 12 and 14 via Newbury. A secondary diversion will be in place from Newbury and Hermitage for local traffic at Chieveley and for Newbury Showground.

M4 junctions 14 to 15 Woodlands St Mary, West Berkshire: bridge repairs 

Work to ensure road user safety by undertaking concrete repairs a bridge which carries the M4 over a local road near Woodlands St Mary continues this week. The B4001 beneath the bridge will be fully closed to road users and pedestrians until mid-August. A signed diversion will be in place via Ermin Street and Ramsbury Road.

M4 junction 15 Swindon, Wiltshire: bridge surveys 

Work to undertake surveys of the bridges at the junction 15 junction takes place this week. Lane closures will be in place on the roundabout and approach roads overnight, between 9pm and 6am, from Monday 8 July for four nights.

M27 junctions 3 to 4 Southampton, Hampshire: bridge reconstruction 

Work to maintain journeys and ensure road user safety by replacing the Romsey Road bridge near junction 3 continues this week. A 50mph speed restriction is in place on the M27 east and westbound beneath the bridge until winter.

M27 junctions 4 Southampton to 11 Fareham, Hampshire: smart motorway 

Work to improve journeys by converting the M27 into a smart motorway continues this week. 24-hour narrow lanes and a 50mph speed restriction will be in place until 2021.

M27 junctions 12 Portsmouth to 11 Fareham, Hampshire: road markings 

Work to improve journeys by renewing the road markings along the M27 continues this week. The M27 westbound from junctions 12 to 11 will be closed overnight, between 9pm and 6am, from Wednesday 10 July for two nights. A signed diversion will be in place via the A27.

A3 Petersfield to Horndean, Hampshire: road markings 

Work to improve journeys by renewing the road markings along the A3 continues this week. The A3 northbound will be closed from junction 2 of the A3(M) to the A272 Berelands junction at Petersfield overnight, between 9pm and 6am, from Monday 8 July for two nights.

  • For motorway permitted vehicles, a signed diversion will be in place via the A3(M), M27 to junction 10, A32 and A272.
  • For motorway restricted vehicles, a signed diversion will be in place via the old A3 London Road, A27, A32 and A272.

A3 Thursley, Surrey: surveys 

Work to carry out surveys of the network near Thursley take place this week. The northbound exit and entry slip roads at the junction will be closed overnight, between 9pm and 6am, on Tuesday 9 July. Signed diversions will be in place via the adjacent junctions.

A3 Guildford, Surrey: slip road widening 

Work to improve safety widening the southbound slip road at the Stoke Interchange continues this week. Narrow lanes are in place on the southbound exit slip road at the Stoke Interchange 24 hours a day until August.

A3 Ockham, Surrey: safety barrier 

Work to ensure road user safety by replacing sections of old safety barrier near Ockham continues this week. Lane closures will be in place on the north and southbound A3 overnight, between 9pm and 6am, until Friday 2 August (Monday to Friday only).

A31 Minstead, Hampshire: cattle grid improvements 

Work to improve a cattle grid near the A31 at Minstead takes place this week.

Lyndhurst Road between the A31 and Seamans Corner at Minstead will be closed from 8pm on Monday 8 July through to the evening of Friday 12 July. Access will be unavailable to and from the A31 westbound at the Seamans Lane junction.

Signed diversions will be in place:

  • To join the A31 westbound from Minstead, travel south along Lyndhurst Road to the junction with Football Green, turn left and travel north continuing to the junction with the A337. Turn left and continue along the A337 to the Southampton Road roundabout. Take the first exit onto A31 Southampton Road, then at the roundabout take the first exit to join the A31 dual carriageway.
  • To exit the A31 westbound to Minstead, continue to travel westbound along the A31 to Stoney Cross, turn left onto Stoney Cross Plain Road and travel south to Lyndhurst. At the traffic lights turn left onto the A337 Romsey Road and continue north, then turn left onto Lyndhurst Road and continue to Minstead.

A31 Cadnam to Ringwood, Hampshire: road markings and resurfacing 

Work to resurface a section of the A31 westbound near Picket Post and renew road markings along the A31 and M27 takes place this week. The road will be closed from junction 2 of the M27 to Poulner Hill at Ringwood overnight, between 10pm and 6am, from Monday 8 July for ten nights (Monday to Friday only, and not on Friday 12 or Friday 19 July). A signed diversion will be in place via the A36 to Salisbury then the A338 to Ringwood.
