A Higher Education Taster Day at Southampton University has given Andover College high achieving AS students a head start on their UCAS applications. The tailor made day gave the first years a feel for one of the UK’s best universities, with talks on how to apply and what makes a good personal statement, which is considered the vital part of an application.
The College’s High Achiever’s Group are students who achieved A and A* GCSE grades. These students are all encouraged to not only go to university after their time at Andover, but also to stretch and challenge themselves to apply to Russell Group universities (the UK’s leading 24 universities), of which Southampton is one.
Whilst at the University the students experienced their first Higher Education lecture courtesy of Dr Conor McHugh from the Philosophy department. With fees and debt always high on the agenda when it comes to university discussions, the Andover students also enjoyed an important talk on personal finance.
Rob Price, Curriculum Leader and High Achievers Coordinator said: “These are our top performing students who we expect to also excel next year at A Level. As High Achiever’s they are mentored through challenges on a programme which stretches their intellect and takes them to new levels of achievement. A series of specially tailored activities and opportunities have been designed to enhance personal development to enable these students to reach their full potential.”
Forthcoming trips for the High Achievers include King’s College London and Cambridge University.
With over 40 AS/A2 and A Level subjects to choose from, Andover College’s Sixth Form offers outstanding results with 99.3% of students achieving A* to E at A Level in 2014. Almost all students who applied secured at their first choice of university last year.
